今天我们要讲的地方叫圆明园。The English name is
call the Old Summer Palace. It’s
originally called the Imperial Gardens.
It is one of the most famous sightseeing places in Beijing, and it’s
only around 4 kilometers from TsingHua University. It was first constructed in 1709 during
Emperor Kangxi in Qing Dynasty. 圆明园一共用了150年来建造。(The Old Summer
Palace totally used 150 years to build.)
During this 150 years, Yuanmingyuan expanded to total area of 350
hectares.
It splits into 3 parts –
(yuanmingyuan)圆明园, (wanchunyuan)万春园, and (changchunyuan)
长春园. All three gardens are not often referred to
as Yuanmingyuan. In this palace, there
are all kinds of halls, pavilions, chambers, earth and rock hills, rivers and
ponds, and exotic flowers and grasses from different parts of the country. Some of them are even from around the
world. In the palace, it doesn’t only
have constructions from traditional China, it even have western
architectures. Yet, during the Second
Opium War, Anglo-French expedition to China invaded Beijing, and without went
into the palace set fire everywhere and took away all the valuables in the
palace. One of the most famous places is
call the Grand Waterworks. In front of
it, there are 12 animal bronze heads build according to 12 Chinese
zodiacs.
During the time when they
invaded the garden 12 animal heads were lost and separate to different parts of
the world. After People Republics of
China is form in 1949, Chinese government is trying to gather back all the
items and objects took from the palace and rebuild yuanmingyuan in a site near
by the old yuanmingyuan site. Now,
yuanmingyuan is open for tourists, with the old burnt down constructions,
people go in to remember this history and it is one of the famous place to go
for Beijing people to enjoy their weekends.
